The process for an initial evaluation at ABCDE SLP is easy! Once you have a script from your doctor, the clinician will conduct an assessment of speech and language skills, cognitive-communication skills, oral motor and swallowing function. Based on the results of the evaluation, a personalized treatment plan will be developed with parent input in mind!
The frequency of therapy sessions at ABCDE SLP will depend on the individual's specific needs and treatment plan. Typically, therapy sessions are scheduled once a week. Parent training are also available to encourage carryover of skills and strategies at home and in the community.
Augmentative or Alternative Communication, frequently referred to as AAC, is any type of tool that aids a student in communicating without verbal speech. Types of AAC may include speech generating devices, picture symbols, eye gaze systems, and switches/buttons. AAC can be beneficial to any child who is not able to access verbal communication and/or are not intelligible when using verbal communication. Your child may be a good candidate if they do not have a reliable way to communicate with others and are demonstrate increasing frustration when their needs are not being met. If you are unsure if AAC might be beneficial to your child, and/or you want to learn more about AAC use, don't hesitate to reach out to our evidence-based, highly skilled AAC Specialist.
Don't stress -- ABCDE and SLP Services will NOT have you waiting a year to book an appointment to be seen by a competent therapist, like many of the major outpatient or hospital settings. Evaluations are scheduled as soon as possible to ensure efficient access to communication and care and are typically booked within two weeks of initial contact. Once you have had your initial evaluation, therapy services will be provided consistently without large gaps in care.
Yes! It is my whole hearted belief that behaviors stem from limited access to effective reciprocal communication. As an SLP, it has been my experience that when we provide the client with access to an efficient communication system AND are providing consistent language input on a system that they understand, behaviors begin to subside. Throughout my time as an SLP, I have specialized in working with moderate-severe disabilities and have a variety of behavior management techniques up my sleeve! Additionally, I practice neuroaffirming therapy and meet every client where they are at. I embrace the intersectionality that shapes each client and encourage developing interests that are unique to each person.
I am happy to share that ABCDE and SLP services is now accepting certain insurances in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In Rhode Island, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Neighborhood Health Plans of Rhode Island are now accepted. In Massachusetts, Blue Cross Blue Shield is accepted and Massachusetts Medicaid credentialing is in progress.
If these are not your providers, I am happy to provide superbills for your insurance. Although it might initially feel like a big expense, there is no greater investment than your child's ability to communicate effectively and efficiently, and I am confident it will be worth every penny!
As an SLP, I have treated children with a wide range of abilities and skills. I am experienced working with children who have been diagnosed with expressive/receptive language delays, developmental delays, phonological processing disorders, and autism spectrum disorder. I have also worked closely with children who carry diagnoses of childhood apraxia of speech, Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), Angelman Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, Deafness, Menke's Kinky Hair Syndrome, and more! I have seen a wide variety of diagnoses and thoroughly enjoy working with complex cases.
At ABCDE and SLP Services, we are fully aware and understanding that life happens and you may find yourself needing to cancel a previously scheduled appointment. If this happens, we ask that you do your best to cancel 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment, otherwise half of your session fee may still be applied. We also know that during vacations and summer, things can get busy and you might forget an about an appointment which would be considered a "no-show." If the appointment is "no-showed" the full session fee will be applied. In the case of three no-shows throughout the plan of care, the client will be discharged and a new evaluation will not be able to be scheduled for 6 months of discharge.
